Bexhill on Sea

Bexhill is situated between Hastings and Eastbourne. It is rather small but this is exactly what makes it such a charming place. If you are looking for a quiet and placid location, Bexhill is the right choice for you.

In 772 AD the Bishop of Selsey was given a piece of land by his king to built a church on it. So he did, and around this church, called St Peter´s, Bexhill grew and attracted many pilgrims. Later, the 7th Count of Bexhill decided to establish the village as an exclusive seaside resort. He initiated the building of a big wall along the seaside which was  open to traffic and is nowadays the De La Warr Parade. Beautiful Victorian and Edwardian houses line the street.

The aforementioned Count initiated as well the building of the De La Warr Pavilion. It is the first example of such a modern architecture in Great Britain. With its periodic art exhibitions, concerts and shows it is the cultural heart of Bexhill.

In the southern part of Bexhill visitors can enjoy peace and a beautiful view at Manor Gardens as well as the presentation of a Shakespeare´s play. An exhibition at Manor House shows an exquisit selection of memorabilia from the 18th century until now.

However, the apparently so quiet Bexhill has a surprising past: It is the birthplace of British Motor Sport. In 1902 the first British Motorrace took place here and every year in August the „Classic Car Event“ recalls that.

But Bexhill has got something to offer for the non-motorised as well: a swimming pool, the Ocean Bowling and Bexhill Leisure Centre to name but the most important. At Egerton Park spectators can watch Rugby or Cricket games or even an annual horse show.
